The LIBA Foundation was established to support businesses and youth projects in Lincoln. This September, our Foundation hosted a golf tournament which raised over $20,000 to fund this mission. While $14,000 of these funds will go towards our LIBA Foundation Scholarship Program this spring, the Foundation also wanted to find a way to give back to local community organizations who are members of LIBA.

We asked the golfers at our tournament to vote for the community organization they would like to see the Foundation award $2,000. With nearly 30 community organizations to choose from, the golfers’ majority vote was for the Alzheimer’s Association. There are more than 5 million people with Alzheimer’s disease in the United States and as many as 35 million worldwide. The Nebraska Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association was established in 1982, and their mission is to eliminate Alzheimer’s disease through the advancement of research; to provide and enhance care and support for all affected; and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health.

The LIBA Foundation also wanted to invite the entire LIBA Membership to be a part of this philanthropy. A second vote was held, and the LIBA Membership elected to award another $2,000 to the People’s City Mission. Established in 1907, their mission is to be a witness for Christ among the poor and homeless, serve their needs, and advocate their cause to the community at large. The People’s City Mission is Lincoln’s primary homeless shelter, housing an average of 350 men, women and children on a daily basis – or over 500,000 people in their 100+ years of existence.
